Private Member Directory Plan

Designing a privacy-first community directory

A product and governance plan for a members-only directory that helps people connect names, faces and households while exposing as little as possible.

The idea

A community organization wanted its members to recognize and connect with one another. The easy answer was a custom app. I asked first whether one was actually needed.

What I did

I reviewed how the organization’s existing website, mobile app, membership platform and spreadsheet records could work together, and recommended a lower-risk path using existing authenticated infrastructure where possible. The plan covers:

  • Household and individual profile structure
  • Spreadsheet import and record reconciliation
  • Invite-only access and prompt access removal
  • Member-controlled participation and information sharing
  • Privacy-preserving contact options
  • Professional portraits and moderated photo updates
  • Strong protections for minors and vulnerable households
  • Administrative roles, data ownership and audit practices
  • A phased rollout starting with staff and small-group pilots

The principle

Deliver the social benefit, helping people recognize and connect, while collecting and exposing the least personal information necessary.

The organization is intentionally not named.
